Becoming a grandparent is one of those life moments that is hard to put into words. There are plenty of wonderful new grandparent gifts you can give to celebrate the occasion, but honestly, I don’t think any gift could compare to the way my husband and I found out we were going to become grandparents for the first time.
It happened at Christmas.
Our son and his sweet wife gave us a digital picture frame. When they turned it on, there was a picture of an ultrasound.
The funny thing is, I didn’t understand what I was looking at right away.

I thought the ultrasound picture was simply one of the sample pictures that came already loaded onto the frame!
It took me a minute to put everything together. But once I realized that the ultrasound was their ultrasound and that they were telling us we were going to be grandparents, I jumped up with excitement.
What a Christmas gift!
I’ve shared that story before because the digital picture frame went on to become one of my favorite gifts. But when I think back on that Christmas, the frame wasn’t really the gift at all.
The news was.

We were going to be grandparents.

My oldest grandchild is now five, and my husband and I have four grandchildren, all five and under. It is amazing how quickly our family has grown. Our youngest grandson is one now, and he is such a happy little guy.
There is just something about being a grandparent that is hard to explain until you experience it yourself.
That’s why I thought new grandparent gifts deserved a place in my Thoughtful Gift Ideas for Every Occasion series. We naturally shower the expecting parents and new baby with gifts, as we should. But becoming a grandparent is a pretty wonderful milestone too.
And while I certainly don’t think anyone needs a gift for becoming a grandparent, sometimes a little something is a sweet way to say, “I’m excited for you too.”
New Grandparent Gifts Don’t Have to Be Big

If you’re celebrating someone who is becoming a grandparent, please don’t feel like you need to spend a lot of money.
This is one of those occasions when the meaning behind the gift matters much more than the price tag.
In fact, I don’t remember receiving a traditional grandparent gift when we found out.
And that’s perfectly okay.
Finding out that one of your children is expecting a baby is more than enough of a gift.
Still, if a friend, sibling, coworker, or family member tells you they’re going to become a grandparent, it can be fun to acknowledge this new chapter in their life.
A small gift, card, or even taking them out to lunch and letting them talk about the new baby can be enough.
Trust me, they’re probably going to want to talk about that baby!
A Grandma or Grandpa Mug

A mug may be one of the simplest new grandparent gifts, but I think it can also be one of the cutest.
Grandma, Grandpa, Nana, Papa, Mimi, Gigi, Grammy, Pops, or whatever name they’ve chosen can suddenly appear on everything!
You could tuck some hot chocolate, tea, cookies, or another favorite treat inside the mug and make a small gift out of it.
If they haven’t chosen their grandparent names yet, that can be part of the fun.
I remember how strange it initially felt to think of myself as a grandma. How could I possibly be old enough for that?
Then the grandbaby comes along, and suddenly “Grandma” doesn’t make you feel old at all.
It feels like one of the best names you’ve ever been given.
New Grandparent Gifts With the Baby’s Picture

Once the baby arrives, photographs open up an entirely new world of gift possibilities.
You could give the new grandparents a framed picture of the baby, a small photo album, photo calendar, ornament, or another keepsake.
But one of my favorite ideas is to wait until you capture a beautiful picture of the grandparent and baby together.
It doesn’t have to be professionally taken.
Maybe Grandpa fell asleep on the couch with the baby on his chest. Maybe Grandma is sitting in the rocking chair feeding the baby. Maybe you catch the baby’s first big smile at Grandma.
Those everyday moments are often the pictures that end up meaning the most.
Print the photograph, put it in a simple frame, and you have a gift that may stay on their nightstand for years.
A Digital Picture Frame

Of course, I have to include this one!
As I mentioned earlier, our son and daughter-in-law used a digital picture frame to tell us that we were going to become grandparents.
That alone would have made it special forever.
But the frame continued to be a gift long after that Christmas morning.
Pictures could be added to it, which meant we could continue seeing new family pictures without having to print them or even remember to look for them on our phones.
For grandparents who don’t live close to their grandchildren, I think a digital picture frame could be one of the very best new grandparent gifts.
If possible, set it up before giving it to them. Then the parents can send new pictures directly to the frame.
There’s something wonderful about walking past a digital frame and suddenly noticing a picture you’ve never seen before.
It’s like getting a tiny surprise in the middle of an ordinary day.
A Grandparent Memory Book

I really love gifts that become more valuable with time.
A grandparent memory book is one of them.
There are books made specifically for grandparents to record memories about their childhood, parents, grandparents, school years, family traditions, marriage, parenting, holidays, and other parts of their lives.
Someday, those stories could be priceless to a grandchild.
You could also create a simpler version with a beautiful journal and write a few questions on the first pages:
- What was your childhood home like?
- What did you love doing when you were little?
- What were your grandparents like?
- What family traditions do you remember?
- What was your first job?
- What do you remember about becoming a parent?
- What did you think when you found out you were going to be a grandparent?
I especially love that last question.
Imagine a grandchild reading the answer 20 or 30 years from now.
Personalized New Grandparent Gifts

Personalized gifts can be especially meaningful when you know the baby’s name.
An ornament with the baby’s name and birth year could become something Grandma and Grandpa look forward to hanging on the Christmas tree every year.
You could also consider a necklace or bracelet with the baby’s birthstone for Grandma.
Other new grandparent gifts might include a personalized picture frame, family tree artwork, keychain, blanket, garden stone, or another small keepsake.
I tend to prefer personalized gifts that are fairly simple.
You don’t necessarily need a long saying or poem.
Sometimes a baby’s name and birth date are all you need.
Give Them a Grandparent Survival Kit
This one could be really fun, especially for first-time grandparents.
Put together a little “Grandparent Survival Kit” with some of the things they’ll eventually need when the baby visits.
You might include:
- Baby wipes
- Diapers
- Burp cloths
- Bibs
- A small baby blanket
- A few board books
- Simple baby toys
- Baby shampoo and lotion
- A changing pad
- A night-light
- A basket to hold everything
Obviously, Grandma and Grandpa don’t need a complete nursery unless they’ll be providing regular childcare.
But having a few baby supplies at their house makes visits so much easier.
And if they’re anything like most grandparents, they’ll probably start accumulating toys and baby things soon enough anyway!
A Children’s Book for Grandma or Grandpa to Read

I think a children’s book is one of the sweetest new grandparent gifts because you’re really giving them a future memory.
Choose a favorite children’s book and write a little message inside:
“For all the stories you’ll read together.”
Maybe it’s a book the new mom or dad loved when they were little.
That makes it even more special.
One day that tiny baby may climb onto Grandma’s lap, hand her that same book, and ask her to read it again.
And again.
And probably again.
Those are the little moments that make grandparenthood so wonderful.
Give the Gift of Future Adventures
Not every grandparent gift needs to be something that sits on a shelf.
You could give something that Grandma and Grandpa can eventually enjoy with their grandchild.
Maybe it’s a membership to the zoo, aquarium, children’s museum, botanical garden, or another family attraction.
The baby may be too young to appreciate it right away, and that’s okay.
Sometimes the best new grandparent gifts are really promises of things to come.
There will be zoo trips.
There will be park days.
There will be Christmas lights, birthday parties, cookie baking, stories, and probably a few trips for ice cream.
Part of the excitement of becoming a grandparent is imagining all those little moments that haven’t happened yet.
Don’t Forget Grandpa

When we think about sentimental grandparent gifts, I think our minds sometimes automatically go to Grandma.
But Grandpa just received a pretty wonderful new title too.
Maybe he’d love a Grandpa hat or shirt.
Maybe he’d prefer a framed picture for his desk.
You could give him a children’s book about fishing, camping, tractors, cars, sports, or another hobby he hopes to share with his grandchild someday.
Or skip the “Grandpa” merchandise completely and give him a beautiful photograph of the first time he held his grandbaby.
Think about the person rather than the title.
That’s usually the secret to giving a thoughtful gift anyway.
New Grandparent Gifts for Long-Distance Grandparents

When grandparents don’t live nearby, gifts that help them feel connected can be especially meaningful.
A digital frame is wonderful for this, but there are other possibilities too.
You could give them a photo calendar, create a shared family photo album, or use a service that regularly sends printed photographs.
Another idea I love is giving Grandma or Grandpa a copy of the same children’s book the baby has at home.
As the child gets older, Grandma can read the book over a video call while the child follows along with their own copy.
Grandparents can also record themselves reading favorite stories.
Little traditions like these can help build a relationship even when miles separate them.
Sometimes the Best New Grandparent Gift Is Simply Celebrating With Them

You don’t have to buy anything.
I think this is worth saying because sometimes gift lists make us feel as though every life event requires us to purchase something.
It doesn’t.
If your friend tells you she’s going to be a grandma, be excited with her.
Ask to see the ultrasound picture.
Listen while she tells you the baby’s due date, what the parents are thinking about names, and everything she has already found for the baby even though the baby isn’t due for six months.
If your brother is becoming a grandpa, congratulate him.
Take the new grandparents out for lunch.
Send a card.
Bake some cookies.
Or simply say, “You’re going to be such a wonderful grandma.”
Sometimes acknowledging someone’s happiness is the gift.
One Last Thought About New Grandparent Gifts
When I think back to that Christmas when my husband and I first found out we were going to be grandparents, I can still picture that ultrasound appearing on the digital frame.
I can also remember my confusion!
For a brief moment, I really thought it was just a random picture that came with the frame.
And then I understood.
There was a baby coming.
Our grandbaby.
That’s when I jumped up in excitement.
Five years and four grandchildren later, I can tell you that nothing someone could have wrapped and placed under that Christmas tree would have compared to that news.
The little hugs, the smiles, the laughter, the tiny hands, and watching these little people grow are the real gifts.
So if you’re looking for new grandparent gifts, don’t worry too much about finding something impressive.
Choose something that celebrates what is happening in their family.
Give them a picture they’ll treasure.
Give them a book they’ll someday read to a little one on their lap.
Give them something with their brand-new grandparent name on it.
Or just share in their excitement.
Because becoming a grandparent isn’t really about receiving another gift.
It’s about receiving a whole new little person to love.
🤍 Making every house feel a little more like home.
