Just Because Gifts: The Sweetest Surprises Don’t Need a Reason

Just because gifts

Some of my favorite Just Because Gifts haven’t come wrapped in pretty paper. They haven’t had bows, cards, or even anything I could put on a shelf. Sometimes they’ve looked like my husband unexpectedly taking a day off work so we could spend the day together. Sometimes they’ve been wildflowers. And sometimes they’ve looked a whole lot like a freshly cleaned bathroom.

Yes, I consider a clean bathroom a gift.

Especially when I wasn’t the one who cleaned it.

I think that’s what I love about Just Because Gifts. There isn’t an occasion telling someone they need to do something nice for you.

They simply wanted to.

Maybe that’s part of why these little gestures mean so much. There’s something pretty wonderful about the simple act of doing something kind for someone else, especially when there’s no expectation of getting anything in return.

And somehow, that makes even the smallest gesture feel a little more special.

The Best Just Because Gifts Are Unexpected

Just because gifts

There is something wonderful about having no idea that someone has planned something for you.

Imagine waking up on a perfectly ordinary Saturday morning and hearing, “Get dressed. We’re going somewhere.”

Maybe your husband has packed a picnic and you’re headed to the mountains.

Maybe the kids think you’re running errands, but instead you pull into their favorite restaurant.

Maybe you pick your grandchildren up and announce that you’re going to get ice cream.

Or maybe your husband has secretly made a hotel reservation for the two of you and arranged everything so you can spend one night away together.

The surprise doesn’t have to be elaborate.

In fact, sometimes I think the simplest surprises are the best ones.

My husband has surprised me by taking a day off work just so we could spend the day together.

No big vacation.

No carefully planned itinerary.

Just a day.

We might go somewhere and play, or we might stay home watching movies and playing games.

Either way, what he’s really giving me is his time.

And that’s pretty hard to wrap in a box.

Just Because Gifts Can Be Experiences

I think we sometimes hear the word gift and immediately picture something we buy.

But a gift can be an experience.

And Just Because Gifts are the perfect excuse to create experiences on completely ordinary days.

Pack a picnic dinner and take it somewhere pretty. Go for a drive in the mountains and stop whenever you find a view you love. Pick someone up for a surprise lunch. Take the kids miniature golfing on a random Tuesday. Tell your spouse to pack an overnight bag without telling them where you’re going.

You could even create a “mystery day.”

Give the person clues throughout the day that lead from one little surprise to another.

Nothing has to be expensive. Breakfast at their favorite little restaurant, a walk somewhere beautiful, a stop for their favorite treat, and a movie at home can turn an ordinary day into one they’ll remember.

Sometimes the gift isn’t where you go.

It’s the fact that someone took the time to plan it.

Celebrate Things That Aren’t Usually Celebrated

Birthdays get cake.

Graduations get parties.

Anniversaries get dinner reservations.

But what about all the little accomplishments that happen in between?

Those deserve some attention too.

Maybe your child worked really hard and brought home good grades. Surprise them with their favorite dinner.

Maybe your husband finally finished a project he’s been working on for weeks. Pick up his favorite dessert.

Maybe your daughter handled a difficult situation with a lot of maturity. Take her out for lunch and tell her you noticed.

Maybe someone in your family quietly pitched in when you were overwhelmed, without being asked.

That’s a perfect reason for a Just Because Gift.

You don’t have to wait for a report card, either.

Celebrate effort.

Celebrate kindness.

Celebrate courage.

Celebrate someone trying something new, sticking with something difficult, helping a sibling, taking care of a neighbor, or doing something thoughtful when nobody was watching.

I think there’s something especially meaningful about saying, “I saw what you did.”

Some Just Because Gifts Grow on the Side of the Road

I love unexpected wildflowers.

Not necessarily a fancy bouquet from the florist.

Wildflowers.

There’s something about someone seeing a little patch of flowers and thinking, She would like those.

Those are the kinds of Just Because Gifts that make me smile.

It could be flowers from the yard, a pretty rock a grandchild found, a pinecone from a walk, or a leaf that has turned the most beautiful shade in the fall.

A child might draw you a picture.

Your husband might bring home your favorite candy bar.

A friend might drop a loaf of homemade bread on your porch.

Someone might see something at the grocery store and think of you.

The monetary value may be almost nothing.

The I thought of you value is huge.

Just Because Gifts Can Look Like a Clean Bathroom

I don’t think acts of service get enough credit in conversations about gifts.

Because if my husband cleans the bathrooms without my asking him to, I absolutely consider that a gift.

Actually, depending on the condition of the bathroom, it might rank above flowers.

An act of service says, I noticed something that needed to be done, and I did it so you wouldn’t have to.

That’s love in work clothes.

Empty the dishwasher before someone gets to it.

Fill their car with gas.

Take over bedtime with the kids.

Mow someone’s lawn.

Shovel a neighbor’s sidewalk.

Fold the pile of laundry.

Take the dog for a walk.

Make dinner when it isn’t your turn.

Clean the kitchen and tell everyone else to go relax.

Take care of the errand your spouse has been dreading.

None of those things comes in a gift bag.

But every single one can be a gift.

Give Someone the Gift of “You Don’t Have to Do It”

Here’s another Just Because Gift I think would be wonderful.

Ask someone this question:

“What’s one thing on your list today that you really don’t want to do?”

Then do it for them.

Can you imagine?

Maybe your mom needs to return something to the store.

Your husband needs to pick something up across town.

Your teenager needs help cleaning out the car.

Your adult child is overwhelmed and hasn’t had time to make dinner.

Sometimes the nicest gift you can give someone is taking one thing off their plate.

Not adding another possession to their house.

Removing a burden from their day.

Create a Surprise Ordinary-Day Tradition

We have traditions for holidays, but why can’t we have traditions for ordinary days?

Maybe once every few months, you announce a family Just Because Day.

Nobody knows when it’s coming.

Order pizza.

Make a giant bowl of popcorn.

Put blankets and pillows all over the family room and have a movie marathon.

Or pile everyone in the car and go somewhere.

You could have a rule that Just Because Day can’t involve chores.

I think the kids could get behind that one.

Or start a little tradition with your spouse.

Once in a while, one of you plans a mystery date. The other person doesn’t know where you’re going until you arrive.

These little traditions don’t have to happen often.

That’s part of what keeps them special.

Just Because Gifts for Someone Having an Ordinary Week

We usually think to help when something is wrong.

Someone is sick, grieving, struggling, or going through a difficult time, and people rally around them.

That’s wonderful.

But what if we also occasionally showed up when nothing was wrong?

Drop cookies off at your daughter’s house because it’s Wednesday.

Send your college student a little money with a note that says, “Go get lunch on me.”

Leave your husband’s favorite snack in his car.

Mail a puzzle for your college son.

Send a friend a funny card through the actual mail.

Show up at your grandkids’ house with ice cream.

Invite someone to dinner for absolutely no reason.

There’s something delightful about being able to honestly answer the question, “What’s this for?”

with…

“Nothing. I just thought you’d like it.”

Just Because Gifts Don’t Have to Cost Anything

Some of the best Just Because Gifts are completely free.

Send someone an old picture and say, “I found this today and it made me smile.”

Call someone you haven’t talked to in a while.

Sit with your spouse on the porch instead of scrolling through your phone.

Play a game with your child that they always ask you to play.

Take your grandchild to the park.

Write someone a note telling them one thing you appreciate about them.

Watch their favorite movie, even if you’ve already seen it approximately 47 times.

Make their bed.

Bring them breakfast.

Let them sleep in.

Take a walk together.

Give them an afternoon where they don’t have to do anything.

Sometimes what people want most isn’t more stuff.

It’s more of us.

Pay Attention to the Little Clues

I think the secret to really good Just Because Gifts is paying attention.

People tell us what would make them happy all the time without realizing they’re telling us.

“I’ve been craving Chinese food.”

“I wish I had an afternoon to finish that book.”

“I haven’t been to the mountains forever.”

“I love those flowers.”

“I really need to clean out my car.”

“I’ve wanted to see that movie.”

Those little comments are clues.

You don’t necessarily have to do anything with them right away.

Just remember.

Then one ordinary day, surprise them.

That’s when a simple gift becomes personal.

It says, I listen to you.

Maybe “Just Because” Is the Best Reason of All

I love birthdays. I love Christmas. I love anniversaries and celebrations and all the reasons we have to give gifts to people we love.

But there is something different about Just Because Gifts.

There isn’t a date on the calendar reminding you.

There isn’t an expectation.

Nobody is waiting to see what you bought.

You simply noticed someone.

You thought about them.

And you decided to make their day a little easier, happier, more fun, or more beautiful.

Sometimes that looks like a surprise overnight trip.

Sometimes it’s a picnic in the mountains.

Sometimes it’s celebrating a child who worked really hard.

Sometimes it’s a handful of wildflowers.

Sometimes it’s an afternoon spent watching movies together.

And sometimes it’s walking into the bathroom and discovering that somebody else already cleaned it.

I’ll happily take that one.

Because gifts really can come in a hundred different forms.

They can be things.

They can be experiences.

They can be time.

They can be help.

They can be tiny surprises that cost almost nothing.

And every one of them can say the same simple thing:

I thought about you today.

Maybe that’s all the reason we need.

Because the gifts I remember most aren’t necessarily the most expensive ones

They’re the ones that made me feel remembered.

And that’s the kind of gift I hope we can give a little more often. 🤍
