Freezer Essentials: Things I Always Keep in My Freezer to Make Life Easier

Freezer Essentials

If there’s one appliance in my house that has saved me more time, money, and stress than almost anything else, it’s probably my freezer. Over the years, I’ve figured out which freezer essentials are worth keeping on hand, and they’ve made busy days, unexpected company, and those nights when I simply don’t feel like cooking so much easier.

I don’t think I’ve ever looked at my freezer as just a place to keep frozen vegetables and ice cream.

To me, it’s a little bit of peace of mind.

My Freezer Essentials Are My Safety Net

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that life rarely goes exactly as planned.

Some days are busier than expected. Some evenings everyone seems to be hungry at the exact same time. And sometimes I’m just tired and don’t want to start making dinner at the end of a long day.

That’s when I really appreciate having freezer essentials ready to go.

Knowing I can open my freezer and find a homemade meal waiting for us takes so much pressure off. Instead of ordering takeout or scrambling to throw something together, dinner may already be mostly finished.

It really does feel like a little gift from Past Wendy to Future Wendy.

I Love Cooking Once and Eating Twice

One of the easiest ways I’ve found to keep my freezer stocked is simply to make extra food when I’m already cooking.

If I’m making soup, chili, taco meat, spaghetti sauce, shredded chicken, or a casserole, I’ll often make enough for another meal.

I’m already chopping the vegetables.

I’m already browning the meat.

I’m already making the mess.

Making a little extra usually doesn’t take much more work.

After dinner, I’ll package the extra food into freezer containers, label it, and tuck it away for another day.

Many of those meals can go straight into my Instant Pot when I’m ready to use them. I can get dinner warming while I work on something else around the house, which makes busy evenings so much easier.

Freezer Essentials You’ll Almost Always Find in My House

Every family’s freezer will look a little different, but ours tends to have a pretty predictable lineup.

Some of my favorite freezer essentials include:

  • Freezer burritos
  • Breakfast burritos
  • Individual chicken pot pies
  • Homemade soups
  • Extra taco meat
  • Cooked shredded chicken
  • Cooked ground beef for quick meals
  • Homemade cookie dough
  • Homemade cookies
  • Bread
  • Hamburger buns
  • Tortillas
  • Frozen vegetables
  • Butter
  • Cheese
  • Ice packs
  • A few frozen treats for the grandkids (or Grandma!)

Having even a few of these foods tucked away can make meal planning so much easier.

I also like freezing bread, buns, and tortillas because they’re exactly the kinds of things I don’t want to discover we’re out of five minutes before dinner.

And if I find butter or cheese at a really good price, I’m happy to make a little room for those too.

The Cookie Stash Everyone Knows About

Of all my freezer essentials, the cookie stash might be my favorite.

If you’ve been around Wendy’s Cozy Home for very long, you probably already know that I bake a lot of cookies. I love having several varieties tucked away in the freezer because you just never know when you’re going to need one.

Sometimes we want a cookie after dinner.

Sometimes someone stops by, and it’s nice to be able to put out a plate of homemade cookies.

Sometimes I want to take a treat to a friend or neighbor who could use a little encouragement.

And sometimes Grandma just wants a cookie.

Homemade cookies freeze beautifully. I usually pull them out and let them sit on the counter for a few minutes before serving them.

Although, if we’re being completely truthful here, I’ve eaten more than a few cookies straight from the freezer.

They’re still pretty good!

My Freezer Essentials Looked Very Different During My Couponing Days

There was a season of my life when couponing practically became a part-time job.

And back then, our freezer was PACKED.

Milk.

Meat.

Cheese.

Butter.

Bread.

Frozen vegetables.

And yes, even cereal.

I know freezing cereal probably sounds a little funny, but when I found an incredible deal, I made room wherever I could!

There were times our freezer was so full that fitting one more package inside felt like putting together a puzzle. I’d pull things out, rearrange everything, and somehow manage to squeeze one more bargain into the last available space.

The funny thing is that my kids always seemed to know exactly where the treats were.

They could dig through a freezer packed from top to bottom and somehow emerge with an ice cream sandwich.

Looking back, those are some pretty sweet memories.

Couponing isn’t a part-time hobby for me anymore, but those years completely changed the way I think about keeping food on hand. I learned to buy ahead when prices were good, avoid paying full price whenever possible, and use my freezer to make our grocery budget stretch a little further.

Why I Still Keep These Freezer Essentials Stocked

My freezer isn’t overflowing the way it did during my couponing years, but I still love having it stocked.

Keeping my freezer essentials on hand means:

  • Less food waste
  • Fewer last-minute grocery store trips
  • More homemade meals
  • Easier meal planning
  • Less temptation to order takeout
  • A chance to take advantage of good grocery prices
  • More flexibility when life gets busy
  • Something homemade to share with someone else

You don’t need a huge freezer or six months’ worth of food to get those benefits.

Even two or three homemade meals tucked away can make a difficult week feel a little easier.

My Favorite Tip for Keeping Freezer Essentials on Hand

If I could share only one freezer habit, it would be this:

Whenever you’re already cooking, make a little extra.

You don’t necessarily need to spend an entire Saturday preparing freezer meals.

Double the taco meat you’re already making.

Make an extra pan of your favorite casserole.

Cook a little more shredded chicken than you need.

Make a larger pot of soup and freeze half.

It’s one of the simplest ways I’ve found to gradually build up my freezer essentials without creating a lot of extra work.

The same thing goes for baking.

Whenever I’m making cookies, I usually make a full batch, sometimes two. Some go into the cookie jar, some are shared with family and friends, and the rest head straight to the freezer.

Future Wendy is always thankful because there’s almost always something homemade ready to share, whether it’s for company, a neighbor, or just a quiet evening at home.

A Quick Freezer Safety Reminder

Properly packaging and labeling food is important when you’re building up your freezer essentials.

I like to label homemade meals so I know what’s inside and when I made them. It saves me from staring at a mysterious frozen container three months later and wondering what in the world I put in there!

For reliable information about safely freezing and storing food, I recommend the USDA’s guidance on freezing and food safety.

My Favorite Freezer Essentials for Making This Easier

Having a few good supplies makes keeping my freezer stocked much easier.

Some of my favorites include:

Freezer containers

Reusable freezer bags

Freezer labels

Aluminum pans with lids

Vacuum sealer

Instant Pot

Freezer Essentials Make Everyday Life a Little Easier

My freezer doesn’t have to be packed from top to bottom to make a difference.

A few homemade meals, some cooked meat, bread, vegetables, and, of course, a stash of cookies are enough to give me a little breathing room when life gets busy.

That’s really why I keep these freezer essentials around.

Sometimes the best gift we can give ourselves isn’t another kitchen gadget or a perfectly organized meal plan.

Sometimes it’s opening the freezer at 5:00, seeing a homemade dinner waiting for us, and realizing we’ve already taken care of tonight.

And I think that’s one of the coziest feelings of all.

Making every house feel a little more like home.
