7 Simple Cleaning Habits That Keep My House Looking Cleaner Than It Really Is

cleaning habits for a cozy home

There are some people who seem to have naturally spotless homes, and I’ve always wondered what cleaning habits they have that make it look so effortless.

Because I am not one of those people.

If you stopped by unexpectedly, you would probably find a blanket draped across the couch, a pair of shoes by the front door, or maybe a few dishes waiting in the sink.

My house isn’t perfect, and honestly, I’m okay with that.

Over the years, I’ve learned that having a home that feels clean doesn’t mean spending hours every single day on overwhelming cleaning habits. Instead, it’s the little cleaning habits that make the biggest difference. These simple routines help keep clutter from taking over and make our home feel calmer and more welcoming.

Here are a few of the cleaning habits that have worked well for me.

1. One of My Simplest Cleaning Habits: Put It Back

My simplest of cleaning habits involves putting everything backa

This is probably the habit that has made the biggest difference in our home.

Whenever I get something out, whether it’s a pair of scissors, a mixing bowl, a spice bottle, or a book, I try to put it back as soon as I’m finished using it.

Such cleaning habits only take a few extra seconds.

If I leave things sitting out because I’ll “put them away later,” those little piles quickly turn into bigger piles. Before I know it, the house starts to feel cluttered.

Putting things back immediately saves me from having to spend an hour cleaning later. It also means I almost always know where everything is.

Now, if I could just get my oldest son to develop these sorts of simple cleaning habits without having to get after him, I’d really have this habit mastered! I have a feeling I’m not the only mom who has had that thought.

2. One of My Favorite Cleaning Habits: The “I Don’t Know What to Do With It” Spot

One of My Favorite Cleaning Habits is to have a spot for things I don't know otherwise where to put

Every house seems to collect random things.

A receipt from the grocery store.

A library book.

Something that belongs upstairs.

A package that needs to be returned.

Instead of letting those items pile up on the kitchen counter or dining room table, I keep one designated spot where everything goes until I have time to deal with it.

It’s my catch-all spot.

When I have a few extra minutes, I empty it and put everything where it belongs. Having one contained area feels so much less overwhelming than having little piles scattered throughout the house.

3. One of My Best Cleaning Habits: Deal With Paperwork Right Away

Paper clutter has a way of multiplying overnight.

Advertisements.

Credit card offers.

Store flyers.

Random papers that somehow make their way into the house every single week.

I’ve learned that if I deal with paperwork as soon as it comes in, it never has a chance to become a mountain sitting on my kitchen counter.

Most of the unnecessary mail goes straight into the recycling bin.

If something is important, I scan it using my phone so I have a digital copy whenever I need it. Once it’s safely stored, I can usually recycle the paper copy or file it if I need to keep the original.

Cleaning habits like this one only take a few minutes, but this one keeps paper clutter from taking over our home.

4. I Never Leave a Room Empty Handed

This habit hardly feels like cleaning at all.

If I’m heading upstairs, I’ll grab something that belongs there.

If I’m walking into the kitchen, I’ll take an empty glass or coffee mug with me.

Walking past the laundry room? Maybe I’ll toss in a towel.

Those little trips only take a few extra seconds, but they save me from having one giant cleanup session later.

5. I Follow the One Minute Rule

One thing I’ve learned is that many chores take far less time than I imagine.

Hanging up a jacket.

Putting away a pair of shoes.

Loading one dish into the dishwasher.

Folding a blanket.

Wiping off the bathroom counter.

Most of these tasks take less than a minute.

If I do them right away instead of thinking, I’ll get to it later, they never have the chance to pile up into a much bigger job.

6. I Reset the Kitchen Before Bed

I don’t always deep clean the kitchen before going to bed.

Sometimes I’m just too tired.

But I do try to wake up to clean countertops and an empty sink whenever I can.

There is something about walking into a clean kitchen first thing in the morning that makes the whole house feel more peaceful.

Even if it only takes ten minutes before bed, I have never regretted doing it.

7. We Always Have a Donation Box Ready

One of my favorite organizing habits is keeping a donation box in one of our closets.

Whenever someone no longer wants something, outgrows it, or simply doesn’t use it anymore, it goes directly into the box.

Once the box is full, we take it to the donation center.

Then, once a year, we go through our closets and look for anything we haven’t worn or used during the past year. Those items also go into the donation box.

Because we’re constantly letting things leave our home, clutter has a much harder time moving in.

Small Habits Really Do Add Up

None of these habits are life changing by themselves.

In fact, they’re almost so simple that it’s easy to overlook them.

But together, they’ve made a huge difference in helping our home stay cleaner, more organized, and much easier to maintain.

I don’t spend every weekend doing marathon cleaning sessions.

Instead, I try to do little things throughout the day that prevent the mess from building up in the first place.

My home isn’t perfect.

There are still days when the laundry gets behind, the dishes stack up, and clutter finds its way onto the counters.

That’s just life.

But these little habits help me spend less time cleaning and more time enjoying the people who live here.

And to me, that’s what making a house feel like home is really all about.

My Favorite Organization Tools

🗂️ Mail Organizer

📱Document Scanner: I just use the scanner on my phone, and honestly, it has worked great for me. I looked for a dedicated document scanner to recommend, but I couldn’t find one with consistently good enough reviews, so I’d rather only recommend products that I truly feel good about.

♻️ Recycling Bin Keep a recycling bin nearby, or label a cute basket or small trash can for the room where you usually sort paperwork.

📦 Donation Bin it comes in many different colors.

🧺 Storage Baskets Comes in many different colors and sizes.
