There was something so exciting about getting College Care Packages from home when I was in college.
The moment I saw that little notice that I had a package waiting, it instantly brightened my day. It didn’t matter if it was a big box or a small one. Opening it always felt a little like Christmas morning.
It wasn’t really about what was inside.
It was knowing that someone back home had been thinking about me.
Now, years later, I get to experience that same joy from the other side.
As a mom, one of my favorite things to do is put together care packages for my son while he’s away. Sometimes they’re filled to the brim. Sometimes they’re just a few simple things. But every single one is packed with love.
I also sent college care packages to my older son when he was away, and I loved doing the very same thing for him.
If you’ve spent much time here at Wendy’s Cozy Home, you’ve probably figured out that one of my love languages is giving gifts and serving the people I love. I probably overdo it sometimes, but that’s okay with me.
I simply want my children to know that no matter where they are, they are loved, they’re being thought about, and they’ll always have a home cheering them on.
Why College Care Packages Mean So Much
College is an exciting season, but it can also be overwhelming.
Students are learning to live on their own, managing classes, studying late into the night, making new friends, and figuring out how to balance everything that comes with adulthood.
Even when they’re having a wonderful experience, there are still moments when they miss home.
A care package quietly says:
“I’m thinking about you.”
“I love you.”
“You’ve got this.”
Sometimes that’s exactly what they need to hear.
Some of My Favorite Things to Include
Over the years, I’ve found that my son is happiest when I fill the box with things he’ll actually use or enjoy.
Some of my favorite items include in college care packages:
- Puzzles (My son loves working on these to unwind).
- His favorite cereal that he can’t always justify buying himself.
- Gift cards to restaurants, grocery stores, soda shops (or wherever your student loves to go).
- Shampoo, body wash, lotion, deodorant, toothpaste, and other everyday toiletries.
- New socks or comfortable clothes.
- Laundry supplies if they’re running low.
- School supplies.
- Their favorite candy or snacks.
- Homemade cookies.
- Store-bought favorites (for my son, Mint Chocolate Oreos are always a winner!).
- Microwave popcorn.
- Drink mixes or hot chocolate packets.
- A favorite family recipe printed on a cute recipe card.
- Seasonal treats for holidays.
- A handwritten note tucked somewhere inside the box.
Honestly, the handwritten note may be the most important thing in the package.
Years from now, they probably won’t remember which brand of shampoo you sent.
But they’ll remember how loved they felt.
Don’t Wait for a Special Occasion to Send College Care Packages
One of the best parts about college care packages is that they don’t need a reason.
Of course, birthdays, finals week, Christmas, and Valentine’s Day are wonderful times to send one.
But some of my favorite boxes have been the completely unexpected ones.
A random package in the middle of October.
A surprise box during a stressful week of classes.
A few homemade cookies after a difficult exam.
Those are often the packages that mean the most because they weren’t expected.
They simply arrived with a reminder that someone back home was thinking about them.
College Care Packages Don’t Have to Be Expensive
Some of the sweetest care packages don’t cost much at all.
A favorite candy bar.
A handwritten letter.
Family photos.
A pair of warm socks.
A bag of popcorn for movie night.
A small devotional or encouraging book.
Even just one or two thoughtful items can brighten an entire week.
College care packages are never about spending the most money.
It’s about sending a little piece of home.

Here are a few ideas:
Finals Week Survival Kit
Fill it with snacks, highlighters, pens, gum, hot chocolate, protein bars, and encouraging notes.
Movie Night Box
Popcorn, candy, microwave popcorn seasoning, fuzzy socks, and a gift card to rent a movie.
Breakfast From Home
Favorite cereal, oatmeal packets, pancake mix in a jar, hot chocolate, and homemade muffins if you’re close enough to deliver them fresh.
Cookie Box
Several varieties of homemade cookies tucked into airtight containers, along with a note reminding them to share…or not!
Cold Weather Comfort Box
Warm socks, gloves, lip balm, lotion, tea or hot chocolate, and a cozy blanket.
One Last Thought on College Care Packages
One of my greatest hopes as a mom has always been that my children know they are deeply loved.
Life gets busy, and they may not always hear the words as often as we’d like.
But opening a box from home reminds them that someone is thinking about them.
Someone is praying for them.
Someone believes in them.
Someone can’t wait to hear how classes are going.
Whether your college care packages are filled with homemade cookies, a favorite box of cereal, a few practical necessities, or simply a handwritten note, you’re sending far more than a box.
You’re sending encouragement.
You’re sending comfort.
You’re sending home.
And sometimes, that’s exactly the gift someone needs.
